So I was about ready to crash and didnt know it. AD: When I started off listening to music as a child, I always followed the lead. And I said, I am _not _gonna tour and sit on a stool. I got a panic in me. Yknow? Pete writes these big, off the wall, sort of English rock songs, with big dramatic openings and classical-type things. RM: I noticed you using traditional grip at times. I didnt! Because I thought that we were big already, that we didnt need a video game. Theyre all great. I think they thought I was just going to leave the group and go solo and tell everybody to gowhatever. Its been your band longer than it was ever Steves band. AD: Yes I did, at one point. You were feeling like you were going to burn it out. I got these ProTools sketches of songs, and I guess its time to record some of em. I could never tune it properly, but then I put one of the cast rims on it and it made such a big difference, it's unbelievable. And theres been some others, that I think have just been wonderful. In these days, it would actually be respectable! On the ZappaCast, you mentioned Aynsley Dunbar and Terry Bozzio being in the audience at one show - did you meet them after? . Theyre doing what theyre doing because they feel its what they want to do, and Im doing what Im doing because its what I feel I wanna do. This is a drag, after all this hard work. And Herbie [Herbert] had received a tape from somebody at the label, of Steve Perry. I mean, its in my blood, yknow? At least I did. There is only so much you can do before it bores everybody to death. Please prove that you're human. I remember that tour, the Raised on Radio tour. Using your fingers makes em better. The Waka/Jawakaalbum was an interesting session, just because it was completely off the wall ad-lib. You were able to function, so you never really addressed any of that stuff. Once you've made your name, you can go into a band, say the Jefferson Starship, and people will say, "There's Aynsley Dunbar. Theyre all magical to me. Called Patiently. It began at that point for me, with the band. And he pretty much came back and said, Yknow, this is a personal issue, and Im not gonna be pushed in a corner to get my hip fid. Was it weird, coming back to Journey after that? Youd think that a certain amount of success would squelch certain drives. And some funk. And he will not allow me to have his number. Which singers will do a lotbut I only had to do it once. **. And those lyrics are a big part of it. There was something that we had together that I think neither of us have been able to find anywhere else. I think the beginning of the end was when Neal started his solo career. I wanted to play. took years for me. It was crazy, but it was great. Or east of Highland. So that was a big part of the pressure? After not having played on stage for several months, that was a lot of stran, but after wards I felt like I could have gone on and played some more. Aynsley Dunbar, had quit when he and I stopped getting wages about 9 months before the album was finished, though I was still a member (unpaid) - I re-recorded some bass parts in London when John Sykes was doing some guitars, just a month or two before he left. RM: How did you first get involved with music? I got to the top of this hill, and I was in trouble. It's an hour-long workout, in which you push yourself to the maximum. Sopranos is a definite yes. So I'm up there playing away and I decided it was time l finished, and all of a sudden. So at the end of a night, you feel great. After being on the road, I'd spend a couple of months studying with him once or twice a week. I had been through a lot of divorces, and probably a lot of em due to this problem, and I had to just really face everything on a straight level. You made one more record together. But thats okay. We'd sit down and play along with big-band charts. I believe I was a functioning alcoholic. I mean, wed get together with Neal, and wed all write the arrangements. You can be working 10, 12, 14 hours every day. It was a nightly thing for me when I was on tour. Most of them get bored by it. I would go into overdrive on certain things. Drums become a lead instrument at that point. It wasn't like, "Well, I've played every- thing 1 want to play, so now. Liverpool drummer Aynsley Dunbar had been working with Merseybeat hitmakers The Mojos (their "Everything's Alright" reached no.9 in 1964) in their later incarnation as "Stu James & The Mojos," and recorded two singles with them before the group disbanded in 1966. . I just work out on that and tap my feet on the floor. Id had some pain in my left hip area before, but I didnt think nothin about it cause it would come and go. She's the most amazing reader-very disciplined. **. Dont go out and play these songs with someone else and crack the stone. At certain times, I've had a drum lose its tone because it has been dropped and the shell has cracked, or something has gone wrong and it's deader than the other drums and I've had to replace It. And I said to Herbie, the manager, I think this is a bad ideathat it would fracture the band on some level. I met him when Journey was opening up for Jeff Beck, before Steve was in the band. AD: I like the albums I've done with the Starship, of course. In 1974 after having recorded twelve albums in two years Aynsley was acclaimed by the music industry as the world's leading session musician. And I had always been a big fan of Jan Hammer, the keyboard player that was playing with John McLaughlin and Mahavishnu Orchestra, and was doing all the Miami Vice themes at that time, the music for the show. And life just said, I think youve got to go deal with this. Cause I was not happy with things in my life. And I didnt want to stop either, by the way. And I hope you print that, because its important that people know that. But I didnt see it until the first time it aired, that Sunday night. I just dont hang out in that environment anymore. So, there are certain parts of the song which have to be played the same because they are part of the music. One time, I went therethere used to be a coffee shop right in front of it, and I was having coffee, watching people. But he didn't really extend my feelings-he just helped me understand something I wanted to be doing, which was reading music. There are a lot of good musicians out there whose names are not known-even with some of the top bands. I called Jonathan around 95, and talked to him on the phone. AD: Sink would be the word. Everything's electronic. Id gotten back in touch with parts of the life I had before I was successful. But thats how the world judges you. At first, I was scared about really doing it, because I thought, "What would it be like to be muscle-bound and go on stage? Eventually I got bored with the screeching sound of the violin. I still felt this panic to get a deal, get signed, maybe make another record. Did they give you any advice? RM: Let's talk about the Jefferson Starship. On one song he gave me a chart that was all marching-type drumming-roll after roll, flams, drags, ruffs-and it was great. Well, of course, everybody gets burned, but I was like a machine out there. I'll give it up; " It was more like, "I got this far. Otherwise, the band would never know where the hell I was. So I held out a little bit, cause I wanted to know. It's a situation that you have to grow into. And he was playin, I think, nine Journey songs and three of his original songs. His playing always has a bit of a flair to it, but I think he's always a supportive musician and he doesn't overplay. Then It Changed My Life. Then Rod Coombes for a while. Well, I thinklooking back, I was sort of a workaholic. Mmm-hmm. It felt so awesome, to see that song be used in that moment. I said Okay, you do what you gotta do, and Ill do what I gotta do. And I hung up the phone, and when the dial tone came back, I called my attorney, and I said Start the divorce. And he said, What divorce? And I said, The divorce. And I told him what happened. We mastered the record. He's on the "A Hard Road" album, along with Peter Green. I really, honestlyand you must print thisI really dont want to respond to what theyre doing, because what theyre doing is none of my business. I find studio work less fulfilling, actually. doing all these great solos, but the band was always playing the same level of intensity behind him. So I find it better to listen to what is being played on the top and then react to that. I like to do it when I'm not on the road. So it can make any singer a little crazy. When you're first starting out, you have to make a name for yourself, and you don't make a name for yourself by being hidden under the name of something else. Yeah., He knows he wasnt the only drummer considered for the role but he was surprised when Bruce Kulick later told him that one of his heroes, Aynsley Dunbar, had been auditioned and then ruled out. They couldn't see any further than where they were at. Anything worth anything goes down the path of discussion, disagreement and greatness, I think. And so I started a long process, seeing many doctors, and the guys got impatient. Then the band's ego got too much for me to cope with and I had to dump them. You want to leave it so you're backing them, rather than leading them. I sat in the balcony and had Peter Green and John McVie with him. He is not dating anyone. To cut out the over-ring on the bass drums, I have them lined with half- inch thick foam rubber . The band is getting better and better, and with everyone writing, I have more opportunities to play different feelings on songs. And if I am around people that are messed up, you wont see me there too long, cause it reminds me too much of what I probably looked like. It has nothing to do with you as a drummer. Those are the guys that I look up to. AD: No. And its what I really love. Im not. Well, like I saidwe were good together. I guess I was just in denial about it, like, You gotta be kidding me. [Journey had] just reworked our partnership. I told him l never sign contracts that are one-sided. So I just waited, knowing it was going to happen sometime. Can you unpack that for me a little bit? After all those years of doing everything, it didnt change my original drive, my need to get some music out there or do something creative. You can play as much as you want when it comes to solos, but when you're playing behind vocals, you don't want to be scratching around all over the place. Every time I told somebody I was writing a story about the new lead singer of Journey, Id get the same incredulous response: Steve Perrys not the lead singer of Journey anymore? Even though the piece I was writing was mostly going to be about Arnel Pineda (whose pre-Journey work can be seen here) and the present-day incarnation of the band, I knew I couldnt write anything about Journey without getting in touch with Steve Perry. And Ill tell you, to this day, I dont understand what that meant. I have to price myself above that sort of stuff. But I needed to go home. At times it was wonderful, but it had been a long time, together. We have a million other people out there who want to hear something. I was always on the edge of being what I expected out of myself, and what people wanted me to be, and I never wanted to settle for anything short of what it should be. I find that now, though, even when I push myself, I don't have to go into overdrive. Okay. So Don Ellis called me and said Herbie wanted me to fly out and meet Neal. It can make you just live your life in a state of insecurity and fear. Im sure they werent sure about Robert, either, you know what I mean? So the first gig I did with him, I was just learning the songs. Have you followed whats gone on since then, at all? I imagine its really easy to be a functioning alcoholic when youre on tour with a rock band. With the smaller drum, I can get a more solid, compact sound, which is better for the audience out front to hear. It felt like it was toast, and I felt like we should just stop. I look at people like BB King and I go, man, God bless em. We finally got Aynsley Dunbar. Goddammit, we were good together. So he said, "Well, If that's the case, I guess we don't need you in our organization." Other times, I might just powerhouse it right through, depending on the time I have, what the audience is like, and what's going on. And maybe its just my opinion. There was one guy who really gave me a hard time taking apart everything I did. It would really slow me down." _[A few days after I talked to Perry, I did a follow-up interview with Neal Schon, Journeys co-founder and lead guitarist, in which we discussed some of the same issues Perry brought up. And then the second song we wrote, I was downstairs in Gregg Rolies house, where I was living, in Mill Valley, and Perry was over, and we were sittin down in the beanbags in the music room, and he started singin me these melodies that he had, for Lights. And I just started putting the stumble to it, felt like it was gonna be a stumble, and tried to give it some Hendrix-y type chords, to make it sound cool, and then I added a bridge to that, for a guitar solo, and that one was done, in about ten minutes. When I did the "Stable of Stars"' ad for Ludwig, I was talking to a lot of people l didn't know, and they were the drummers for certain bands. Okay. So were listening and goin, Wow, this guys got an amazing voice, but does he fit with us? Because it was a radical change. "Freedom at Point Zero," I play a 16-bardfum opening, and it has to be the same, basically. I arrived in L.A. and his wife picked me up at the airport and took me to his house, where I lived for nine months. And so we kept waiting around to see if he was gonna go take care of it. And really did have a drinking problem, and didnt know it. And the theory coming from Steve, and I kind of understood it, was that everybodyll go out and be able to express themselves musically in some other areas, and then when we reconvene, perhaps we will have discovered or found things that we can bring to the group to help the group evolve. I can understand how they feel. So Herbie got his tape, and he played it for us, and he goes, This is your new singer. _[laughs] _And were all looking at each other going, Really. I ended up going to Bowie's party after Lou's session, and Bowie asked me if I'd like to join him. Even if you get a loose tension rod, it will still keep the tone of the drum because it's so well cast that the rods on either side of the loose one will keep the head seated perfectly. This past weekend I began my re-read of all Carl Sagan's books + his video series and interviews. The matched grip keeps you simple enough to hit the drum that way. Same for the bass. It might appeal to all of the drummers in the world, but we only have X amount of drummers who are going to go out and buy that record. Aynsley Dunbar's age is 77. Career. His exact words were, Youre some big shoes to fill, but we wanna get out there. Next I got a small tom-tom, then two cymbals, then a large tom, and sort of built up the kit bit by bit. So my drum solo lasted about 20 minutes. I could go out and I could have eight, nine, ten vodkas, and then I wouldnt drink for another three or four days.
